There are 2 easy ways to access the newsgroup rec.games.trading-cards.jyhad. One is thru the archive groups.google.com, linked here: http://groups.google.com/groups?q=rec.games.trading-cards.jyhad Setup an account, and post away. The other is thru a newsreader program like Outlook Express. This is how you would setup Outlook Express. 1) Open Outlook Express 2) Pulldown 'Tools' menu and select 'Accounts' 3) Select the 'News' tab 4) The white box is probably empty meaning you will have to create an account. If not skip to the next number 1 step. 5) Select 'Add' 6) Select 'News' 7) Type in your real name (can be whatever really, but pick a good one because people will see this as the originator of any messages you post) 8) Select 'Next' 9) Type in your email address. [Note: Apparently software exists that takes emails from newsgroup postings and adds those emails to spam-lists. Some people prefer to put an email such as 'ghost@N...' which, since it is not a valid email address will stop such methods. Taking the 'NOSPAM' part out of the email will enable people to contact you.] 10) Select 'Next' 11) You will now need to type in a server name where the messages will be drawn from. You will need to get this from your Internet Service Provider. Generally, it will look like 'news..com' 12) Your ISP will tell you if you need to check the 'My ISP requires me to log on' 13) Select 'Next' 14) Select 'Finish' 15) You should now have a valid news account. Go to the next page for instructions on how to subscribe to a specific newsgroup. If you already have an account listed under 'Tools', 'Accounts', 'News'... this is how you connect to a newsgroup. I'll use the Jyhad one as an example for this, but you can use this method to search for raunchy porn too. 1) Open Outlook Express 2) If your layout is the OE default, you should have a section of the screen called 'Folders'. Under the various folders you will see the news server name. Single-click on this name. 3) On the new screen that comes up, press the button 'Newsgroups...' 4) A list of available newsgroups will appear in the white box. This may take a few minutes to fully load. [Note: This list is LONG! Newsgroups on every possible subject are available, ranging from anarchist politics to discussions of Buffy's tits] 5) At the top of the screen there is a space where you can type search criteria. It is labeled 'Display newsgroups which contain:'. In this box type 'jyhad'. 6) Two newsgroups will appear. I think the 'alt.games.jyhad' is mostly abandoned. The one you want is called 'rec.games.trading-cards.jyhad'. Single-click on that name and then press 'Subscribe' 7) Hit 'Ok' 8) On the left of your screen, you should now see the selected newsgroup UNDER the news server name. Select that newsgroup. 9) You will see messages appear where you would normally see your emails. This is NOT a complete list. By default, the most recent 300 messages will be displayed. 10) Have fun! It is highly advisable that any users learn some basic 'netiquette' before using the newsgroup. Frankly, I am NOT qualified to instruct you on this issue :) Users often complain about the harsh treatment they get from old-timers on this newsgroup, and I have also been slammed a few times. Generally, this is more a case of text not being a proper medium for conveying sarcasm and the same people who insult you are usually also the most helpful people in the group. My best advice is: 1) Be concise 2) Use proper grammar, spelling and punctuation. 3) EDIT your messages before sending them 4) Praise the name 'Wes' wherever you see it 5) Read posts carefully before replying. You will not look like an idiot as often as I do. 6) If you do not know the answer to something, DON'T offer one Furthermore, try 'lurking' on the newsgroup for a week or so before you try posting anything. This will give you a feel for the 'rules of engagement'... it's not as bad as it appears. Note that there is often a time-lapse between sending a post and seeing it on the newsgroup. If you do not at first see it, be patient. (As you can tell Newsgroups require zen-like meditation skills).
